Is anyone here a recovering atheist?

For intuitive and critical discussions, from spirituality to theological doctrines. Fair warning: because the subject matter is personal, moderation is strict.

Lol that is my opinion too. Pascal was kind of a heathen.

A heathen? How so?

Still, that the name they still hold highest for themselves, Britain, is its Roman province name, says not little.

And yes, they were the only ones still (not suddenly) writing in Latin when most of Europe had forgotten it.

Most English people identify as English first and British second, according to polls. Britain is the name of the union.

I didn't say what they identify with most. I said what they hold highest.

There is no English Empire.

The term British Empire was invented in the 16th century by the Welshman, John Dee.

Britain is the union of England, Scotland and Wales. No one in the UK is confused about its meaning.

Correct. Before that, there wasn't much of an empire to speak of.

Well, correctly, it is the name of a Roman province. If the union itself has a name, it is the United Kingdom.

Britain means something more. There is a reason the name can be applied to an empire. A union does not lead an Empire.

Exactly. The English state had existed for centuries before the empire was founded, as I said earlier.

It's the name of the island. British refers to those things that are shared between the three nations on the island.

United Kingdom is, on its face, not the name of an island or any place. It is the name of a union. United. Union.

Yes, Great Britain. It's more usual just to say Britain. At least in Britain it is, anyway.

It is how I wish, and it is how it is.

You shouldn't be ashamed, you should be proud.

In any case, what gave Britain the power to conquer the world was Rome. And that, bien sur, is why it used its Roman name to do it.

Heathen means nothing, its a categorical misapplication...you are splitting the religions into two arbitrary groups which either believed in a God or Gods as if that made all the difference when it doesnt...there were monotheistic religions like Sol Invictus cults which resembled heathenistic religions and there were polytheistic religions which resembled Christianity or Judaism more than anything...and 'heathenism' was still worshipped in Eastern and Northern Europe until industrial revolution...Poland was famously split between the 'Protestant Catholics'(hostile to the papal authority) near Germany, Catholics proper in the middle and a weird mix of paganism and Catholicism which acted and worshipped independently of the Pope until the First Deluge(or maybe even later)...
