The thing is, people don't understand what Carlsen means.

No, really, they don't understand.

Fischer, Bobby Fischer, the Chess God whose revelation has touched the heart of many a chess expert, is Muhammed Ali.

Magnus Carlsen is Mike Tyson.

Chess is like an argument, but without all the stupid concepts.

That's because chess revolves around a specific set of rules. And the rules are applicable to everyone. Objectively as it were.

Where concepts about chess can become more or less stupid [depending on your own political prejudices] is when the discussions shift to, say, why are there so few women at the highest level of the game?

Arguments explored here for example: https://www.discovermagazine.com/planet ... andmasters

That's obvious.

Because women have less testosterone and so are less concerned with destroying people.

When they do excel at high level chess, and needless to say more women exist that can beat me at chess than chess games I have ever played, they tend to have a much more artistic, compositional, aesthetic view of the game. They are much more drawn to the balance and the mechanics of a position.

Wow! That wasn't stupid at all!!

Although patriarchy might still have something to do with it.

Judit Polgar, probably the strongest female chess player ever, once said something to that effect. Let me find the quote...

"One can say that in the last decades chess has become more of a sport than a science. I see it from an artistic point of view."

Men play chess. Women play chess players.

In the times when female head Gods were worshiped, things were considerably more violent.

Why do I play d4?

I started as an e4 player. But I had this deep hate for d4 players. Really, it's hard to explain the hate. It seemed at once cowardly and purposefully avoiding everything that is fun about the game. Like I'm here wanting to do battle and you just want to make doodles.

But also my defeats against d4 players were always the most crushing, and I never understood why. Speed is the essence of battle, right? What advantage can dicking around have? Whatever "set-up" move you make, I can make a direct move that is just as powerful as your roundabout combination, and stronger for being faster, at least in theory.

In any case, they really disgusted me.

They disgusted me to the point where it affected my enjoyment of chess. Because obviously almost half of the games I played as black, or like a third, would disgust me.

So, in order for that I could continue to enjoy chess, I decided to start playing d4. Just to get it out of my system, eliminate the hate, then I could go back to e4 and not be so offended every time I saw d4. I mean if so many people played it, and so many grandmasters, there had to be something to it. I would find what it was and get back to e4.

And I haven't gone back since lol.

And now, though I have a vague sense of superiority towards e4 players, and am a little bothered by their impatience and lack of respect for the game of composition that is chess, I have none of the hate and bile. And I happen to understand where they're coming from.

Chess isn't "supposed" to be anything. Chess is just what you get away with.

I think the secret to d4 is: no matter how quick and direct you make your pieces in the opening, you are not going to cross that board quick enough to be decisive. It takes time to cross a chess board. If you accept this, you have an advantage.

And well, heck, the strongest player in the history of chess is a d4 player.

I will say that the strongest lines for e4 in my experience are the most violent, unrelenting ones. So far, what my experience tells me is that if you are going to pause for a breather at some point down the e4 line, you might as well just play d4.

Like, king's pawn to e4, king's pawn to e5, queen's knight to c4. What? Come on. What is it you want out of life?

So Pedro you never did manage an answer. Lawyer's son, in an impoverished country, with a fondness for Minnesota... were you an exchange student?

"were you an exchange student?"

Yes he was, and teachers hated him. In fact he was so badly behaved in fifth grade history class that Mrs. Penderfield begged the principle to exchange him for another student.
