I've now accepted that I need to make a little trip to home depot. But you need to tell me what I need to get.

You're tryna build a floating shelf. Here's whatcha do. Don't use that little piece.. it'll look stupid. Instead, use a piece of 1x10 or whatever that is that's the same length as that 1x4 in the wall. Then, you're gonna buy or make little angled support pieces underneath like in the pic. But they have to be on a stud when you fasten them.

My feng shui is tight, I make a little tiny space feel spacious and inviting.

I guess it boils down to the supports. I get a nice piece of wood that is not small and silly like the one I have but not big and all-encompassing like the one you suggest, somewhere in the middle. Then I place it on top of the wood plank there which is already screwed onto studs. Then what do I do, how do I make the supports?

That's exactly what you do. Then buy three little ornamental support pieces to go under it. Dont use big screws or you'll split the wood (unless you pilot the holes... which you ain't gonna do).
