An Audience of One

Fractalled shades of green sketched upon
an artist's boundless canvas.
What secrets do you hold to be revealed?

Oh, little Hop-a-Long,
where are you quickly off to
and does the Silent Stream of Time urge you on?

Little one out strolling
how easily you smile at me.
Will moonbeams always grace your face?

Where are you, little Dragonfly?
You did your deed on such short notice.
What shall I name Thee ~ Random or Determined?

Oh Moment of Moments!
Oh Breathtaking, Perfect Moment!
Are you sometimes not born from imperfection?

My mind is neither coal nor diamond.
So why upon its excavation
must we share a similar vein?

I watch as he takes his evening dip
her cool, blue waters call to him.
But who, pray tell, has been seduced ~ Sun or Sea?

Rise up and spread your fluid wings, Oh Fount!
Like a Glorious Gull seeking limitless Sky.
What magical, misty music plays your soul?

We dig through those ashes.
We sweep through our mindscapes.
But do they reveal even one little diamond of clarity?

Your name is not in water writ, Bright Star, nor shall it ever be
and as I mused, I asked: "While you clambered through your clouds
could you, with hope, have known this?
"Look closely. The beautiful may be small."

"Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the oftener and more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me."

“Whereas the beautiful is limited, the sublime is limitless, so that the mind in the presence of the sublime, attempting to imagine what it cannot, has pain in the failure but pleasure in contemplating the immensity of the attempt.”
