Pursuing some ideal form of life is a fool's errand, IMO. It is the idea that spawned life coaches and fraudulent gurus who tell you it's possible to "think your way to happiness & success." What a wonderful fairytale to believe.
A million years ago, we were spending our time hunting and gathering, fucking and birthing, fighting and dying. Was that a better use of time? Who gets to determine what a "good use of time" is? Is anything non-essential a waste?
I'm glad we have hobbies and past times to keep us busy so we don't have to spend our lives contemplating our meaningless mortal existence. I think that has value.
"So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men." -Voltaire
"If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do."
-Bertrand Russell
