If You're Listening To Music Right Now III

Lol

I think this would suit your above narrative of fictitious female Asian gorgeousness better… was a coincidence I was going to post it, but now it’s being posted with a pre-compiled yet very fitting narrative of a preconceived aesthetic ideal to accompany it.

lol it does have a good little groove. this is what would happen if beck and trent reznor had to come to an agreement.

Another from this ‘joywave’ band. I always thought was the guy who did that song where the chorus is something like ‘wish I could turn back time, to the good dope dayyys’, etc. Isnt that the same guy? I haven’t googled it. Yeah oughta Google it. I’ll Google it. Googling now.

Still haven’t googled that yet. But. I have listened to enough and seen enough live footage to be prepared to offer my final judgement of joywave, which I shall now do.

Gay.

However, they do have a handful of catchy, solid grooves. But they’d need more than a handful of good tunes to be excused of that gayness.

What about shaven castrato singers in jean shorts?

Democracy
Leonard Cohen

It’s coming through a hole in the air
From those nights in Tiananmen Square
It’s coming from the feel
That this ain’t exactly real
Or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there
From the wars against disorder
From the sirens night and day
From the fires of the homeless
From the ashes of the gay
Democracy is coming to the USA
It’s coming through a crack in the wall
On a visionary flood of alcohol
From the staggering account
Of the Sermon on the Mount
Which I don’t pretend to understand at all
It’s coming from the silence
On the dock of the bay,
From the brave, the bold, the battered
Heart of Chevrolet
Democracy is coming to the USA

It’s coming from the sorrow in the street
The holy places where the races meet
From the homicidal bitchin’
That goes down in every kitchen
To determine who will serve and who will eat
From the wells of disappointment
Where the women kneel to pray
For the grace of God in the desert here
And the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the USA

Sail on, sail on
Oh mighty ship of State
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the Squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on

It’s coming to America first
The cradle of the best and of the worst
It’s here they got the range
And the machinery for change
And it’s here they got the spiritual thirst
It’s here the family’s broken
And it’s here the lonely say
That the heart has got to open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to the USA

It’s coming from the women and the men
Oh baby, we’ll be making love again
We’ll be going down so deep
The river’s going to weep,
And the mountain’s going to shout Amen
It’s coming like the tidal flood
Beneath the lunar sway
Imperial, mysterious
In amorous array
Democracy is coming to the USA

Sail on, sail on
O mighty ship of State
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on

I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can’t stand the scene
And I’m neither left or right
I’m just staying home tonight
Getting lost in that hopeless little screen
But I’m stubborn as those garbage bags
As time cannot decay
I’m junk but I’m still holding up this little wild bouquet
Democracy is coming to the USA
To the USA

and finally a folk dance:

my god i had forgotten all about this song. heard it yesterday on the radio, and with it came the nostalgia of the memory i associate it with… or rather have associated it with since 2012. this is what i most love about a great song; if you discover or rediscover it in some unique circumstance that will forever be relived every time you hear it.

the immediate image that comes to my mind is working with the inmates in the horticulture ‘department’ (really just a small fenced in warehouse and an area for gardens and shit). specifically one summer afternoon when we were digging an irrigation area out with shovels and shit. but this is what did it. the instructor of the program - who, by the way, would later be fired and charged for smuggling K2 into the prison - had this boombox that he let us listen to. this was a real treat because the only source of music you had was a pair of headphones.

the prison is situated in swan quarter NC, which is as close as the state of NC gets to producing a climate similar to that in southern lousiana. a very humid and swampy region isolated out in the middle of no fucking where. there was no natural shade anywhere, and when the sun got above that place in the summer, it was hotter than’uh muhfucka.

you already know what’s coming, and it was exactly like you picture it… i shit you not. this fuckin guy beside me (who looked just like that o’toole serial killer) in for manufacturing meth, looks over at me and in a rich souther drawl sings with fogerty ‘don’t let the man getcha, do what he done to me. cuz he’ll getcha… cuz he’ll getcha nah-nah’

i would struggle to find the right words to describe the pristine nature of that moment, really, so i’ll just call it transcendental for brevity. there was a goodness of human will there that was so profound because it was so ironic. even the black inmates were grooving to it, eventually falling in time to the music with their digging. at that moment, or i should say for the few minutes the song played, we were all equally in the grit toiling under that hot sun. everything that we thought put at us odds with each other was immaterial for at least five minutes. proud men, born on the bayou, every one of us.

lol i can’t remember that guy’s name, but i’ll never forget how simply fantastic he was when he looked over at me and did that.

“Da Vinci nervously smokes on the sidelines”

Santa: what do you want for Christmas?

Me: a dragon

Santa: be realistic

Me: a marble machine

Santa: what is the color you want your dragon to be?

…and he didn’t lose a single marble or finger, in the making of that song and video… that magnificent man and his musical machine.
