My highest rating I recently attained was 1845. I let it slip though, back at 1600 for the 10 minute games. In 5 minute games I am much worse.

i doubt that. i have a very difficult time with short term memory and am unable to hold a picture of the board four to five moves in the future, in my head for very long. i see it for a brief moment, then lose it, and have to walk through the moves again in my head.
but thanks to Chernov and a relatively lengthy prison sentence, i was able to spend some time with the game and get to know it. i make a much better teacher than a player, as my knowledge of the fundamentals far exceeds my ability to play. this might not make sense to you.

in any case that, too, is wrong. certain principles of the game are verified by the logic alone, and one wouldn’t need to actually ‘play them out’ to understand them. moving the A pawn to 3 before bringing out the knight prevents the ruy lopez from pinning the knight against the king. one can acquire this knowledge reading about it or watching it happen, and wouldn’t need to actually do it to verify its truth.
