Pretty damn good - 8/10

Solace (A solid 7.5/10 for this sleeper. If you love Anthony Hopkins, then it’s a must see.)

The Frozen Ground [6.5/10] Based on true events. Predictable.

Finally going to see Atomic Blonde and Alien Covenant, fingers crossed they don’t suck.

Alien Covenant bites the big one! 3/10 and that was being generous.

Atomic Blonde [5/10 Had my kind of soundtrack. The movie plodded along without much of interest occurring and the plot was relatively weak, also the fight scene’s where direct punches to the head occurred, were not realistic since no one was ever knocked out. The twist at the end didn’t make up for all this movie lacked.] I still prefer Geena Davis as the bad-assed spy in…

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Nil by mouth

Ray Winston’s performance is so ‘real’ that it makes this film watchable maybe once every five years.

Cam EYA cant!!!

How do you rate that…

National Lampoon’s Dirty Movie [3/10 Totally raunchy with some funny bits.]

A Ghost Story [3.0/10 The movie could have been more interesting. My biggest beef other than the lack of action and dialogue was the director’s camera work, choice of long shots, too many long shots that lasted for friggin’ ever. This movie caused me viewer’s pain so “BAM!” low score.]

Annihilation

Finally, a good alien encounter movie! I thought it was pretty original take on the subject, unlike any that I’ve seen so far in sci fi genre, which to me was really like a breath of fresh air. It has some political undertones, diversity, feminism and all that good stuff, and a few head scratching logical holes (why not take the boat?) but once you overlook that, it’s actually pretty good.
It doesn’t exactly explain things (it keeps itself enigmatic), and concentrates on showing the consequences of contact. I understood it as a contact with what is really an incomprehensible alien “energy”.
In any case, this movie really put alien into alien - in a refreshingly imaginative way! 8.5/10

Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets [6.5 Some of the CGI is bougie and totally overdone. The male lead is not convincing. The plot is confusing. Some of the sci-fi ideas are interesting, but not coherently interwoven with the mish-mashed storyline.]

Well, since March is the Women’s history month I’d thought to include these two that I came across. I liked both of them.

My Happy Family

Although the setting is in a primarily still patriarchal (Georgian) society that emphasizes tightly knit families and socially defined identities, I think every woman will identify with the protagonist here. In that even today, some men are unable to detach a woman’s identity beyond her reproductive and/or socially defined role. You can sense some people’s, especially men’s, unwillingness, or actual inability to see a woman existing as her own agent.

Molly’s Game

I liked this movie, although to be honest, I think a more realistic reason why she plead guilty is not because of her trying to keep her good name or whatnot, but for fear of being killed in retribution.

Saw both of these Pandora.

My Happy Family. That would be ground breaking in some parts of the world! 9/10

Molly’s Game was a true story I believe. 8/10 I agree with your comments.

Mythica:A Quest For Heroes [7.5/10 A “B movies” series that grew on me]

Star Wars: The Last Jedi [I haven’t even finished watching this movie and the pain in the imagined continuance is immense (still have an hour and ten to go). What a 2 hour and 33 minute piece of crap. I cannot relate to any of these new characters who barely have any personality, none worth mentioning. Even the new creatures leave me cold. Is George Lucas still in charge of this nonsense? Did he stroke out and lose his mind?]

Joker just told me that Disney handles all Star Wars biz now #-o

Black Panther. 8/10

This movie surprised me as it was not exactly what I was expecting. I also liked most of the characters in the movie, especially the new faces. People have said that it was about an advanced and superior African Civilization. I’d say yes and no, but mainly it was about infighting (although there are a few underlying themes in this movie) and if there is a projected sense of moral superiority, it’s appears to be of African over African American. (There’s definitely a disdain for African American culture in this movie).

What could that possibly be about?

I Feel Pretty. 10.5/10.

Tully. 7/10

I didn’t really like the Tully character until the very end, when her real identity was revealed.

(Don’t want to give the movie away, but there is actually a rare medical condition that desctibes the things happening in this movie, and it’s not the one mentioned in it, although related).

More women drama movies:

The Escape 7/10

This movie is similar to Tully, but without the comedic elements. I thought it was unfortunate that she was not able to communicate herself to her husband, and him not being able to understand her.

I, Tonya. 7/10

An entertaining and engaging (auto) biographical account of Tonya Harding. Oh, the passions of redneck love! Lol! Btw, has it been that long ago already?! This style reminded me of Molly’s Game.

The Guardians. 8.5/10

This movie is a visual treat. Like watching Julien Dupre’s Paintings come to life; with a surprise bitter-sweet ending. I thought there was an underlying subtle theme of classism present in there among these women, as well.

Upgrade. 9/10

I really liked this movie, although I don’t know if I agree with the director’s take on the self-aware AI’s intentions. In fact, the more I think about it the more I become doubtful that a truly self aware AI may even be possible, in the first place.
But the ending is well-done.

Il Primo Re (2019)

This movie is on my list to watch this year. It’s the story of Romulus and Remus. The director tried to recreate historical atmosphere, including the spoken language at the time. One of the critiques so far is that it is a little hollywoodish, but we’ll see just how much. I’m also looking forward to comments on the accuracy of historical recreations (the details).

Sami Blood. 7/10

Interview w/director:
youtube.com/watch?v=8gKJ-seihro

It’s a good movie, though I wish the director filled in the gap in main character’s biographical timeline, at least briefly (for continuity’s sake): how she found work, how she met her husband, etc.
