Did Jesus /God give Peter a choice??

Postby johnski62 » Tue Jun 26, 2012 2:57 am

Hi Gang,
I asked this many moons ago and recieved alot of word play but figured I'd ask again and see what my buddies might have to add today.

Did Jesus give Peter any options but to take away his free will when he predestined Peter to deny him 3 time before the cock crowed ??

My opinion is that

Peter did not have free will. He had the physical capacity to be able to choose (i.e. he was not physically forced to go one way or prevented from going another) but that isn't the same as free will.
.
If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God or even God himself, then you also believe that it is impossible for him be wrong in his predictions. So no matter what happened Peter was going to deny Jesus 3 times. Peter could not have changed the situation even if he had wanted to (and clearly he did want to). If Peter had not denied Jesus he would have been proving that God and/or his son was wrong / mistaken. If you belive that God is omnipotent and omniscient this is an impossibility - ergo Peter had no possible choice and therefore no free will.

Do you belive Jesus can be wrong in his preditions ??
Do you think Jesus was speculating and cannot see the future ??
Do you think if Peter ran to the wilderness where no humas were he wouldn't have denied Jesus before the cock crowed??
Or do you think that even in the wilderness he would have denied Jesus 3 times to the trees, then god making a cock crow from thin air just to keep the prediction accurate
Share what you believe as Christians and non.
Thanks
John

Nevermind as an issue of "free will"/omniscience, but even simply as a plausibe story line. I mean, if you chummed up with some dude who made wine, walked on water, magically procured fish, healed the dead, and overall convinced you he was not only a/the prophesized Deity, but a totally radical good guy, not to mention promising you eternal bliss, would you be frightened of men in dresses with pointy metal? For that story to be scripted as a believable tale is, I'd suggest, a "literary" difficulty.
If the sin can be despised and not the sinner, can the belief be ridiculed and not the believer?

^ Yes, the bible has some big plot holes that not even Prometheus could rival.

Well, I suppose Jesus, the Maji, might have asked Peter to watch the grains of sand drop thru the neck of the hourglass or something, to relax and listen to his voice, as he soothingly whispered, "Peter, you will deny me three times, Peter, you will deny me three times, Peter, you will deny me three times," thus ensuring he be denied three times so as to align with prophecy. But the Holy Gist of that rendition would seem to be deprived from the readership, it would seem. We want to believe Peter was reduced to a quivering human like the rest of us. Does the Holy Gist withhold relevant information, so as to affirm our unworthyness?
