Moderators squabble enough without getting into salary pecking order fights. Oh yeah, it’s lucrative. It has to be or these people wouldn’t put up with the shit thrown at them daily.
Nothing which is probably a shame, end of the day your socialist values of caring for the community and doing the right thing, can only be stretched so far by an unending slew of abuse that moderating seems to have become, by uncaring minions who being less equal than others (having as moderators they do, immunity from prosecution on any act they commit no matter how bad unless they do something so bad, ah no wait I’ve seen them do something so bad and the mods all band together and act as appologists as all walled in gated communities will), and long story short hence not subject to the same laws: no minion could give a shit anyway. Honestly they don’t, seriously care about you or anything you do (and they wont, and if they do lie about it to curry favour it is a lie), because you are above them, you have all the power but none of the punishment we are subject, you can get up in the morning have a bad day be a total git, troll be offensive, totally abuse your position and no one will do anything about it exept make some trite post at you and assure you it is dealt with, while you get banned for the same actions and they stroll on, where hence we would be ostracised with no right of appeal you get a walled of gated community where self defence of your actions is the norm. 
It’s a bad system, hell it’s an appalling system that is always on the back foot because at the end of the day it reflects nothing we know about equality or even some sort of equity in the real world: but there’s no one going to pay moderators, there’s no body going to regulate a profession on the net to be better than it is, it is as it is, and always will be, so we are stuck with it, better chastise the moon for hiding from the sun than complain.

It’s just barely functioning crap, that is barely held together on a good day, they know it, we know it, it’s not even a secret. We’re not going to have a decent system. Not unless someone can think of anything better? I am all ears? 
And hmm democracy seen it, doesn’t tend to work, when you have a forum that is run by its members yes, but the only democracies I have seen are basically run by an oligarchy who essentially farm out a pseudo democracy to the masses to keep them quiet. I’m not even sure democracy can work. I’m not even sure the internet can work in any government system, I’m not even sure any of the current ones which are enforcible really work, but the internet is so much more unable to be governed than the real world, and look how much of a mess we made of that. I’m no moaning about it, one just has to get used to it.
Not paying the moderators has nothing to do with my socialist values (which is not an accurate description of my values), but with the fact that this site doesn’t make any money. If I gave moderators a share of the profits, they would be paying me for the privilege of sorting through spam.
Hey I’m not getting at you far from it, you’re just in a bad situation. There’s nothing you can do about it. The internet is a very very bad place for control. All you can hope for as I say is that it runs barely well on a good day, and sometimes barely at all. Spam is no doubt the tip of the iceberg, you could probably write a book on all the crap having to run a forum entails. You keep your money, I have no doubt you earned it.

I think Carleas is more than capable of running a forum like this one. He’s been doing it for a while.
You know it’s easy to point to things that can be criticized without looking at alternatives. I mean, every forum has trolls and assholes and tattle tale little bitches. No one is ever happy to be moderated. But browse around and see where someone is doing better. It’s like breaking up with your girlfriend because she’s not perfect, and then later realizing that no one is.
Also, I think if you just search hard enough, most anything you’d wanna know about anyone is probably already posted someplace. So don’t be lazy while you’re being nosy. It’s bad manners.

The moderators accept the emotional cost of having to deal with it.
I think Carleas just owns the place. So he either makes money off it somehow, (which if he does I can’t see how it could be much), or, it actually costs him something to do it. I think it’s more likely that it costs him something and not just emotionally as it does the mods, but financially as well. There’s some computer someplace running all the time and he probably has fans pointed at it and all kinds of wires and shit all over his house. 4 of his kid’s cats were electrocuted just this year. Then we come on here and give him all this shit.
They’re all masochists really. From the eyes of those being moderated it’s the other way around, but from the neutral perspective you can see that their job is like sorting the mail. Every day someone yells at them for doing all that can be done to keep shit moving.

I think some moderators lurk in the background, and pounce when they have nothing to say on the thread topic, so complain that others offering passionate arguments.
