Examen of personal consciousness ... a worthwhile exercise?
"Do not be influenced by the importance of the writer, and whether his learning be great or small; but let the love of pure truth draw you to read. Do not inquire, “Who said this?” but pay attention to what is said”

What does the expression "Examen of Consciousness" mean?

While the expression is most often attributed to Ignatius of Loyola ... an open minded and educated English speaking person will see it as Socratic (The unexamined life is not worth living) ... predating Ignatius by 2,000 years.
