Why go through Spiritual Stress?

We may wonder and question: Why should we go through all this spiritual stress? What is the necessity to break our head to find out who we are, where we have come from and what is God?

Quite a valid question, isn’t it? We feel that we are wasting our time in life on matters that will hardly have any relevance. But on further introspection the question that arises is, “Are these questions relevant or not?” Let us take one step back - what is the whole world seeking? The whole world seeks happiness. People chase achievements to get pleasure from money, fame, success. It gives them happiness, but money can’t buy happiness because money can only provide pleasures. Moreover, there are disappointments, after which happiness comes to an end. Some are lucky to hit the second peak. They leave achievement and go towards fulfillment, which is fueled by contentment, peace, joy, love, faith, hope, universal connection. They too are seeking happiness. But ask somebody who has climbed the achievement peak, and the fulfillment peak whether they have experienced everlasting joy? There may be peace and there may be pleasure, but one thing that is still missing is purpose.

So, what can give one purpose? The only way I believe to find purpose in life and everlasting joy is probably to search for answers for the questions. In that case, the question that arises is, “Is spiritual quest truly meaningful or is it just a waste of time? What will be the final outcome of this spiritual quest?” If the spiritual quest can truly give us everlasting joy, liberation and the nirvana, then is it not worth pursuing and finding answers to the questions that the world ignores? There may be so many questions that the majority of humanity doesn’t even consider worth asking, but if this can give us the ultimate joy, then think about it - isn’t it worth it?

Achievement is not enough, fulfillment is not enough … you gotta get that everlasting joy.

If someone had everlasting joy, would you say that they need “new and improved” everlasting joy? Now with “better taste”.

These threads sound just like advertising. No matter how good you feel, it’s still not good enough. There is a product out there that you need to get in order to feel better.

My dear phyllo, it is absolutely right to think that once you have attained achievement and fulfillment, and finally, you reach that point of everlasting joy, then you may want something beyond the everlasting joy. But, stop for a moment and think what “everlasting joy” means – it is joy that lasts forever! You start realizing that you don’t have to seek happiness because you become happiness. You are the source of happiness. You won’t have to seek happiness anymore, and therefore, there is no more need for new and improved everlasting joy.

It’s actually eternal Peace (love/joy combo). But each soul arriving there must submit to self-judgement first and obedience next to remain in grace.

Have you achieved this? What makes you believe you will?

So the ultimate goal or endpoint is to be the source of your own happiness.

In that state, what’s your relationship to other people? They are still happy, unhappy, suffering, etc. depending on circumstances.

What’s your attitude towards that? If you see someone suffering, it doesn’t make you unhappy? What do you feel? Do you feel the same thing when a person is suffering as when he is not suffering?

So, what would you do if you woke up in the morning and you saw in your dream there was one man torturing 10 women, cutting them to pieces with a dagger? As soon as you wake up from sleep, would you go searching for that man and stop him from torturing those 10 women? You won’t because you know it is a dream. The moment you know that all what is happening is transitory, you will never become unhappy. You will feel compassion towards them, and you will try to do the best that you can because you know that the spirit in you and the spirit in them are one, but we are not this body and they are also not this body. So all we can do is to serve people knowing that they are symbols of God – serve as much as we can, but when we feel that it is beyond our control and when we feel that the production and direction of this drama called life is the unfolding of God’s divine will, we do our best and we leave Him to do the rest.

That is true.

But, Air is not wrong either, though he has not explained enough.

There are three basic ways to attain enlightenment. In yoga, these are called Hath Yoga, Karm Yoga and Gyan Yoga.

Hath means forcing the issue, or stubbornness. Hath yoga is typical hardcore meditation, what ancient sages used to do in the isolation.

Karm yoga, as we all know is to take things honestly and righteously as they come in life. This is also known as Raj yoga, which means the king of the all yogas. Some call it Sahaj yoga also, means such yoga that comes naturally. One needs not to go in the Himalayas to follow this yoga. He can do it living his normal worldly life though, with some slightly more vigilance and care, besides taking some time out for meditation.

Gyan means knowledge. Gyan yoga means bypassing both of other two empirical methodologies and knowing the result in advance.

Thus, though theoretically it is possible to attain enlightenment by mere knowing ( Gyan yoga) but practically impossible, or next to impossible at least. You cannot know/realize/attain precisely and all what is there unless you do not get the experience of being there in person. Secondly, even if you would be able to know somehow, you would not able to handle and put that knowledge at good use.

Moses and Judaism is perfect example of this phenomenon. Moses offered very subtle issues like Yetzer Hara ( the necessary evil ) to his followers, but not being mentally mature enough to handle all that, that knowledge caused harm instead of benefit to the Judaism. And, Jesus had to go back to basic, simple and easily understable concepts again ( Karm yoga ).
