Philosophers, and in this case those who enjoy discussing philosophy on this forum and others, don’t particularly like to be regarded as psychics. Fair enough. Let us then say that for the purposes of this topic the participants will be regarded as epistemic psychics. Or if that’s still too bristly, we can just say, philosophical predictors.
As American citizens it is more than evident that we differ on many things. Whether we see it in the media, the internet, or even in actual contact with others, the differences are palpable. But regardless of the differences and divisions there is something that we share: a place, a land, an environment where we have the freedom to agree or disagree, a continuance of the place and land where we live.
The question for many is whether that first amendment or any of the other liberties we now enjoy will be enough to guarantee that continuance as we now know it. There are those who think America is on the road to collapse and those who think that what we are currently experiencing is just another bump in the road, that we’ve experienced worse before.
So, without making it a political topic (there are plenty of those already in the media in general), what are your philosophical views as to where the USA will be in 50 years? Gloomy? Anxious? Hopeful? Optimistic? Or do you agree with some like for example Joe Rogan who has often said on his podcast that people are freaking out too much, that eventually things will blow over and things will get back to normal, that the country is in good shape.
I like to think that Rogan and all the others who have that view are right. I really do. But at the same time and considering the gullibility and inaction of people both as citizens and those in government positions, and the now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t relations with other countries, one can’t help but wonder if social volatility will end up being more dangerous than climate warming.
And if it happens that 50 years from now someone reads this, chuckles a bit and thinks that I and others worried too much, that actually things turned out even better for the nation, then please, have a laugh on me. Better you laughing about me than not laughing at all.
