nationstates.net - simulated politics

nationstates.net/

An interesting concept and an interesting implementation. Create your “fantasy” state, and act as overall leader of your citizens. Every issue you decide upon will affect the economy, human rights, etc. of your state and its description. You can join different regions to share specific interests (and discussion), and apply to the United Nations to make and vote on resolutions (which your state is then bound by).

It’s a game really, and maybe shouldn’t be in the forum, but I think it brings a very interesting edge to the power battle and the idea of how you’d act if you were in certain positions - and sometimes the realisation that the decision you thought was right ends up harming your people.

All welcome in the ixyl region, of course

Hey Kajun,
that’s so weird that you too have been playing. I have been playing for over a month, but have been inactive for the last week or so, too much school work.

I agree, the game is an interesting political simulation with a variety of possible outcomes, political systems, etc. I really like the fact that you can submit proposals to the UN.

Furthermore, I hear that the book “Jennifer Government” is pretty good. It lacks in character development, and a few other areas. My significant other bought and read it. She said it has some very interesting ideas about…well you’ll have to read it to find out. :evilfun:

Kajun, what’s the name of your nation and what is your region?

What’s your take?

Hi Magius,

I have been tempted to buy the book - the simulation certainly serves as a good promotional vehicle for it  - and if it’s good, I might just go for it.

It would appear though it does become a little limited, due to the narrow scope of issues that can plague your country and the fact that it all repeats itself. But the proposals part and the associated forums make for some extremely interesting/wacky political maneouvres.

Country: People’s Republic Of Ixyl
Region: Ixyl

Yourself?

Hey guys, I’ve started playing the game recently as well.

Country: United Socialist States of Marendz
Region: The South Pacific

Just in case anyone’s interested

I just started the game after reading this.

Nation: The Free Land of DeCarolis
Region: The Pacific

I’m in too. Liqos. Pacific. Guess what! I went into the forum section on the site and strangly enough it’s got exactly the same format as this one! So who really wrote the book?! I get it. Set up as many websites as you can, then promote them all on each individual site in the hope that at least one of them will be a hit! I like your style! Or maybe I’m just a bit clueless!
Only problem is that I wanted to make some suggestions as to how to make it better, so i went to the forum to see that there are already about 500 topics of discusion , so i figure that id just look stupid suggesting something that has almost definatly being said already.
The first choice was cool enough I could be the intensly diplomatic guy that i am and go half way but all of a sudden I 'm faced with a strike or a 20% pay increase without any facts for me to base dicisions on or an opp to be diplomatic. it’s just A or B. Someones been watching Americas policies way too closely!
Surely with such a massive amount of people attending the site every day they could make it a bit more detailed, ie give us some facts to work on for example what the wages are in relation to the average wages in the country and the degree to which the pay increase would affect our competitiveness. I like to base all my opinions on the facts that I’ve got, but I dont have any! Just some constructive critisism seeing as this is the nationstates thread!

It’s only one guy programming it by the look of it and it’s all just for fun to promote his book so I don’t think he takes it too seriously. I wonder how effective a marketing tool it has been. I’ve always wondered that about all marketing methods.

Hi anon, not seen u in a while.

I’m in there too, Kermitopia and De Bruijn. Two nations is greedy, I know, but I’m a kind of Jeckyll and hyde person who is letting both sides of his personality run rampant.

Nice to be back, I can tell you! Life is tough at the top!! I just saw one of the posts in the news section saying that they get over 3,000,000 (yes that is six zeros!) every day! That’s quite a lot. i can see why its kinda hard to keep track of! its gettin late so I’ll talk again tomorrow. Nice to know someone missed me! Cheers matt! anon

Excuse my ignorance but I presume that when people tell each other that they are for example going to sell them a pokemon, that it is all just make believe? Is this the same for war? I just dont want to tell someone that I’ll buy their four humped camel and then have them wait for me to send their country money!

Last I heard from him, sales of the book as a result of the promotion were not meeting the costs incurred by working on the site. The hope is that work on Nation States 2, and the funds generated by a small subscription fee will counter that - but that deviates from the marketing side of things into provision of a service, so I guess the end result is: no, it hasn’t worked in terms of income/expenditure, but it has worked in raising awareness and sales of the book.
