Anyone here know Marx?

Hi guys! I’m new here and I first off . . . I just think this forum is really cool! Right now I’m reading Marx’s Capital and it’s very difficult for me to understand.

My problem right now is: what is capital? I know it’s the sum of social relation of production . . . that is . . . it has a social component to it. For example, a car you drive isn’t capital, but a car a capitalist rent out to make money is. In the former, the goal of the car is to be driven, and in the later the goal of the car is to make money for the capitalist. Therefore, is capital only the sum of commodities whose use is ultimately for the benefit of the capitalists? I’m just confused . . . I hope someone can help.
