Pretty obvious when my metal phase was…

I could never find anything that truly quenched my thirst =(

That’s probably the best response I’ve ever heard to the ol’ classic ‘Everything except country’.
I’m going to use that one from now on, next time someone says something like that.

What kind of music do you like?
Oh, I like anything.
Oh great! It’s so rare I find someone who also likes Passenger of Shit!

Brilliant.

This year, my favorite album was a minimalist-y electronic album. It actually got nominated for the Mercury Prize this year.
Jon Hopkins, Immunity

I think it’s a bit of a dick response.

When people say ‘Everything except x’, it’s pretty clear what they’re saying. They like most types of music they’ve heard, except consistently x.

Dick response: Oh, haha! They said everything. I bet they don’t like this obscure genre consisting of two bands. What a fool! They said something inaccurate.

It’s not like that, it’s in good fun. Imo it’s a teasing joke that isn’t meant like ‘You’re such an idiot’ but rather more of an ‘I’m just fuckin with ya buddy’ type joke.

It would be more of an aggressive, ‘you’re an idiot’ type joke if, instead of offering up a band that you like but you don’t think they like, it was something that you knew they didn’t like and you also didn’t like, like Justin Beiber. The fact that the band you’re suggesting they like is a band that you’re also claiming to like is what makes it more light-hearted. “You like this band too?” makes it a friendly joke, you see.

Fair enough

Am I the only one who can’t really answer this questions?

That can’t be true, no. I’ve never understood how people could say, “This is my favorite type of music” or “This is my favorite band” without adding “…for now” to the end of it. For me, favorite music/bands depends on the day/wee/month and my mood. Sometimes I go a couple months listening to one band or one genre, sometimes it changes from day to day, sometimes literally from song to song (my playlists are always jumbled so I get a little bit of everything in there). I do have a few consistent favorites - Gogol Bordello, System of a Down, The Eagles, Garth Brooks, Pennywise, Tenacious D, Good Riddance, Lorde, Foo Fighters, Rodrigo y Gabriela, as an example - but as you can see, they’re all over the map.

I’ve never heard of an entire genre I couldn’t appreciate at least one song from.

You have to be completely deaf and numb to call that garbage music.

This is music. Close your eyes and listen, if you have the ears to even hear it.

…the funny thing is I actually do prefer that to C&W… I actually do like all genres except C&W, but I don’t get your joke… sorry :confusion-shrug:

Did you think I said it as an easy way out? I fucking HATE C&W!

Why can one human not believe another in all sincerity? Do you think I’m a joke? think again yeah!

Music - The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.

As for the song you linked to: It’s a simple melody that is given tension by the fast strumming. Nothing special and doesn’t move me much, I found it quite boring actually after the first 30 seconds.

But I’m just deaf and numb, don’t mind me.

It is a very different kind of music, I’ll agree with you on that one. My favorite part of the song, and one I really recommend savoring, is the five minutes of silence afterwards. The song itself is a visceral attack on your senses and is unrelentingly unpleasant. When it fades out the silence of the room is an outstanding reprieve and in addition to sounding wonderful, it actually feels wonderful. It pushes you through a crucible and then leaves you in this grateful calm. This is especially true if heard through a nice pair of headphones that amplify the silence after the song.

It’s an emotional experience, which I really enjoy. Obviously, it’s not something you listen to everyday, but shouldn’t music cover the range of human experiences including the ugly?

Another example would be “In the Hall of the Mountain King”. When that was first played in Paris there were literal riots because of the punishing nature of the song. People couldn’t handle it and lost their shit. Obviously, PoS won’t come to hold the same place in our popular culture, but the overall aim is similar.

Pretty dead topic isn’t it? I guess philosophers have no time to listen to music. But then, Nietzsche said “without music, life would be a mistake.”

So let’s correct this mistake.

My favorite musical genre is symphonic power epic baroque death metal and my favorite bands are Epica and Blind Guardian. I actually listen to everything, but not in a layman’s sense. Rather, I like to taste everything. In the end, I always end up with merely a handful of bands I can say I like.

Actually, to be honest, there is no band that fully satisfies me as of yet. Bands can only satisfy me in terms of their potential. Their music ALWAYS falls short with me, because I am far too demanding.

I prefer rock, especially progressive rock music and jazz rock music, partly also pop music, folk music, electronic/techno music, and - last but not least - classical music!

When it comes to determine the time of the best music during my previous life I designate the 1960’s, especially the late 1960’s, and the 1970’s, especially the early 1970’s.

Now you can easily guess how old I am, can’t you?

For Pythagoras, the world was a harmonious whole, an eternal, divine being: the cosmos. The world harmony was musical for him. Pythagoras had recognised that numerical relations arrange for the harmonic series of tones.

If all humans had merely a bit more music in their souls (and not in their supermarkets), they would be much more happy, peaceful, and satisfied.

the problem with most of these bands is they don’t stand the test
of time. They are here with an album or two and they are gone.
Bands worth listening to, are band who can stand the test of time.

The greatest band of all time is the Beatles, hands down, no other real choices.
the battle is over second best band of all time and a number of those come from
the 70’s. The rolling stones, the who, Grateful dead, all started in the 60’s but
you can make an argument that their best music was in the 70’s. given the history of
rock, the greatest decade for music would have to be the 70’s, with the 60’s, a close second.
From the 70’s, came bands like steely dan, the eagles, steve miller, abba, queen,
individuals like David Bowie, billy joel, Elton John, and the list could go on as these are just
off the top of my head. Any type of research can improve my list greatly.
I would vote “the who” as the second greatest band of all time.

ps, I listen to alternative music as my driving choice and at home mostly listen to
new age as I am usually reading or writing at home.

I like it. Incidentally, the tremolo style reminds me of another good song: youtube.com/watch?v=eds1ivwq1oc

I wouldn’t call any genre my favorite, but I listen to progressive rock/metal most consistently.
