I mostly dislike rap. Corny beats, corny choruses, always talking about “Oh I’m so much better than all the other rappers and I have more money and cars,” it’s quite boring to hear literally 100% of rap songs talking about that. Fuckin hate that shit.
But now and then some experimental rap comes out that I quite like. It transcends that old, tired, trite shit that plagues the shit they play on BET; it takes rap – nay, music – to a new level. Here’s just a small sample of some of the stuff I like:
I’m a hip hop head from way back. Unfortunately, I can’t even tolerate most new hip hop. I usually stick to stuff from the 90’s with a few select new school artists/groups that I follow. Anyway, i don’t know much about experimental rap—I’ve never even heard the term before. I didn’t care much for the first and last video, but the middle one was decent. As far as newer artists go, I can’t think of anyone I’d recommend before Cunninlynguists.
My opinion’s very similar to Statik’s. Check out Jneiro Jarel and his various projects (Shape of Broad Minds, Dr. Who Dat, etc.), for great, great stuff.
And maybe it doesn’t make any difference to you, but… the dozens
One thing I like about rap is it’s always ready to take the piss out of itself, there’s a cultural thing amongst Afro Americans to boast, tell tall tales, and be blinger than that fool. A culture that is ripe for parody.
