Saddest songs ever made

Cavatina by Stanley Myers (Theme from the Deer Hunter).
I know that to start on orchestrated music would make the list very big.
But violin sonates by Alfred Schnittke and the second/third (can’t remember exactly) movement of the first symphony by William Walton, I think very subtly conveys the notion of going from sadness to grief to absolutely being destroyed by grief. Where it kinda comes at a suprise that it can go deeper…
If you want to experience some sadness, classical is surely an option worthy of exploration although it takes a bit more patience to tune into stuff.
In another context Britney Spears is ofcourse very sad as well
Somebody has to post this kind of snobbery (I’m not sure I’m sorry)

it’s originally by nine inch nails…
but the saddest song/best song has to be
fade into you by mazzy star

I think the saddest song ever is “wild horses”. The version that was in the movie “fear”. Heard it today for the first time in awhile, very sad and beutiful. some more:

george micheals-teacher: (my friend use to sing it before he moved to florida) every time i hear it, i think of him and miss him, he was a true friend.

enya-any slow song, I think she has the best female vocals ever.

laura McKennit-it’s that voice

Clannad- voice again

I’m such a weeny.

The saddest songs ever made would be by: “Radiohead” & “My Dying Bride”

well, what ive heard anyways.

Tupac Shakur - So Many Tears

This may not be the “saddest” song ever made, but its certainly one of the best depictions of depression that I’ve ever heard (this is coming from a person who has, in the past, been diagnosed with clinical depression).

Try the original much better much more souls and feeling to it… The mind Pete townshend sure is black…

No one knows what it’s like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
No one knows what it’s like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren’t as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That’s never free

No one knows what it’s like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams
They aren’t as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That’s never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it’s like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

The bold is what have been taken out in limp’s version, to me its taking out the best of the song…

Seeker for Truth…

those guys are from right here in San Diego. The ones that sing that song from Donnie Darko! And that is a great song, especcially with that line:

And the dreams I have of dying,
are the best I’ve ever had

of course that was a dramatical re-creation of the real verse.

I would have to pick…

And although you may not find these sad, i do. Yet i cannot see how Britney spears or 2pac are at all sad along with all the rest of that R’n’b or “rap” No offense, but i dispise that type of music.

Evanescence - So Close
Story of the year - The hero will drown
Avril Lavigne - Nobody’s home. (Oh yes i said it, but her new stuff is better than her old stuff)

Hans Zimmer+Enya - Now we are free
Three days grace - Wake up (acoustic version)
Something Corporate - If i die
Something Corporate - Space
Something Corporate - Forget December
Something Corporate - I want to save you
Jars of Clay - Worlds apart

Try downloading some of these and i’m sure something will just make you sad or reflective.

“When a Blind Man Cries” by Deep Purple is one of the saddest Ive heard.

“Anna begins” - counting crows

greenday- good riddance (time of your life)

Pearl Jam- Last Kiss

Beethoven - Fur Elise

The Used - Poetic Tragedy

Midtown - No Place Feels like home

The Ataris - Fast time at dropout high

There are about ten million songs that are all equally as sad even if they seem too obvious.

‘Tell Laura I love Her’ By Ray Peterson…

I hate that song!!!

Creep - Radiohead

AHA - Forever not yours

Nine Inch Nails - Still

Future Man,

I was replying to your thread and during that time it(the thread) was deleted, so I will post this here.

No, not all people who like Steely Dan are smart. A few friends of mine love the group, but are dumb as rocks.

I guess you could categorize Mahavishnu with Steely Dan, but only under very general terms. The two bands being jazz oriented and quite progressive classify them outside of what I consider mainstream.

However, Mahavishnu is more or less an instrumental band, whereas Steely Dan is lyrically based. I think Donald writes the songs around the lyrics. Mahavishnu organizes songs around soloing and major compositional changes. This is perhaps the biggest difference between them.

I love them both and have all the material.

Its funny that you ask about the intelligence of a person who listens to a type of music. I often find that simple minded people prefer very predictable and repetitive music, and smart people like the complex stuff. I think the general public, as music consumers, is more or less forced to listen to the shit on the radio. The bands we hear nowadays appear every fifteen minutes utilizing some new promotional device, void of all substance, and dissappear a few weeks later after leaving irreparable scars on the minds of foolish young consumers. These “bands” aren’t really groups of artists in a real musical sense. They are more like a kind of residue that was left over after the 70’s, who employ only the simplest measures in creating very mediocre music while dancing around in the latest fashionable clothing. Frankly, they suck, they pose, and the are fake.

Fagan knows this. McLaughlin knows this. I know this, and you do too.

So we gotta another fusion fan, eh? Dark Magus is the only other person I’ve talked to who is familiar with this genre of music.

Could you suggest any bands or solo artists that I might be interested in?

 1. Bright Eyes - A Perfect Sonnet

 2. Bright Eyes - Waste of Paint

 3. Goo Goo Dolls - I’m still here

 4. A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras

Piano Sonata Pathetique - Van Beethoven

“Caribbean Blue” – Enya

de’trop,

Have you heard anything by “Return to Forever”?

They’re a jazz, hybrid, fusion supergroup in my opinion featuring Chick Corea, Al Dimeola, Lenny White, and Stanley Clarke.

Romantic Warrior features some truly awesome songs and all four members have at least one song that they have written individually.

Check out Lenny White’s ‘Sorceress’, if you haven’t already, Chick’s ‘The Romantic Warrior’, or anything from that album.

i think i’ve found the ultimate sad song:

both sides now by joni mitchell

i usually skim when people copy lyrics into posts, but have a look at these (or better still, listen to the song).

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, i’ve looked at clouds that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things i would have done but clouds got in my way.

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions i recall.
I really don’t know clouds at all.

Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; i’ve looked at love that way.
But now it’s just another show. you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know, don’t give yourself away.

I’ve looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions i recall.
I really don’t know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say “i love you” right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, i’ve looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I’ve changed.
Something’s lost but something’s gained in living every day.

I’ve looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions i recall.
I really don’t know life at all.
