Yes, trade routes and traders/merchants played a key role in spread and evolution of ideas, and even influencing the course of history. It appears that the spread of phonetic alphabet was done by maritime merchants: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_alphabet

Phonecians also remind me of the Venetian maritime Republic. It was a maritime trade-based state, but also had quite formidable military (and is known as the place of the first assembly line...sorry Ford).
