Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic novel Dracula was the archetype for the variety of vampires of today, which have evolved into new characters as seen for example, in the movie Interview with the Vampire.
So what is the symbolic meaning of the vampire ‘myth’. Freudian theory explains it as:
“The myth can be understood along various levels of psychosexual development: in oedipal terms, for example, the vampire is seen as an abductor of women, killing and enslaving any men who cross his path… The significance and universal persistence of the myth suggests deep roots in the evolution of our psyche. It suggests the omnipresent desire to conquer the secret of life while containing the elements of its renewal. It represents the terrible desire for survival, destroying others to maintain his own existence… Vampirism, as a mortal sin, is contained in the image that most often comes to mind, the perverse nature of the vampiric act, in which the bite and the sucking of blood produce an orgasmic sensation which supercedes coitus.”
What appeal do vampires have. It may have to with their portrayed sexiness. Anne Rice’s Lestat de Lioncourt is depicted as beautiful and impetuous, does what he chooses when he pleases and no one can deny him and he is secretly adored and desired by many. If viewed in a more clear eyed manner, Interview with the Vampire is really a study in the giving or receiving of pleasure from acts involving the receipt or infliction of pain or humiliation. A word for this is sadomasochism.
I remember James once accused me of being a vampire:

The vampire at least is intelligent, the werewolf is a dumb animal. A woman needs to be careful around a vampire because of his subtlety, whereas she could probably out smart the werewolf if she manages to keep her distance. The werewolf is simply a good, but boringly dull, man who is afflicted by a disease. He can’t help it. He is easily taken advantage of and bottles it up inside, until the energy of his rage can no longer be contained and it bursts free.
Both are psychoanalytic symbols for the male psychology–hence the sexual element–but the vampire lore is transferable to the feminine very fittingly. Women make excellent vampiresses–and they are very sexy–for good reason: if the key element that gives the vampire an edge over the werewolf is intelligence, then both men and women have that in the bag; but if the edge that the werewolf has over the vampire is brute physical strength, then I’m afraid that’s more of a masculine trait.
Godlike beings are designed to fascinate women, making women desirous of their company, to be the chosen. God’s a man, duh. His appeal must be naughty more than nice for the danger factor to compel women to know that they are special, the spared if lucky, worthy of a God if coupled.

I also know the cicada imagery was used in the movie all about drugs: A Scanner Darkly which I believe was based on Philip K Dick’s novel. ← Was he grabbing that from the Tithonus myth? Does drug use symbolize a longing for youth in your eyes? A longing for immortality?
