Sugar the Evil

Sugar the Evil

Sticking out your tongue

A crystalline, liquid orb of sweet chemical bonds rolls down a stir stick, as the stick hovers angled downward over your mouth. The drop of sugar rolls lazily down, slowly, taking its sweet, precious time to reach the end. And as it nears the bottom of its descent, it hangs on the edge for a minute. And then it drops, falling through the air toward your tongue, hanging in midair for another second longer. Sugar is lazy, hedonistic, decadent, too good for its own good. Then it strikes your tongue and sticks there.

Previously you were innocent to the nature of it. You’ve never tasted this essence before. But as soon as contact is made, your tongue sends a signal to your brain. It is not a regular message. This one passes by all your barriers, and goes straight the core, straight to your brainstem. You know this, because you feel shivers throughout your body. Your body knows what this material substance is, genetically. Our brains are hardwired for this very thing, to crave it, to adore it, and to need it. Now, you’ve become infected by it. You recognize its memory. This sugar has nourished other bodies like yours, other humans, your ancestors. This sugar is your life-giver before you were even aware of it, sucking on the teets of your mother.

Whereas you spent the first months of your infancy receiving sugar indirectly, “pre-chewed”, pre-digested, already broken down for you into a lesser form, now you are older. Now you are “mature enough” to become perverted and corrupted by it directly, something so simple as a taste of sugar. Now you are ready for it, in its purer forms, perhaps even the purest form. No more pre-chewing it. The sugar is crystalline, hardened yet liquid. Sticky and sweet. And its time for your introduction to Evil.

That drop of sugar on your tongue is biblical. Even the Clueless Christians were aware of its power. An ancestral memory recalled from the Garden of Eden. The snake told you it would “be fine”, “just go ahead and take a bite from the Tree of Knowledge”. Bite into the apple. Feel the intoxication of sweetness. That sweetness flows over, now in a different form. Now we live in a different age, but the lesson is very much the same. The sugar of today is no different than the sugar of ten thousand years ago. It has not changed its nature, and has the human nature changed as well? Has the lesson changed? Is the apple not intoxicating before, as sugar is now?

You were innocent, but now, corrupted by it. The memory is triggered. And the drop of sugar absorbs immediately into the pours of your body. It goes straight into your bloodstream. You have a taste of it now…you have a taste for it. You have the taste of Evil in your mouth. You have the taste of Greed, Lust, Envy, Cruelty, Hate. All from a single drop of sugar. Because one taste is never enough. And one taste will make a glutton out of most. No matter your self-control, you cannot deny the pleasure of its sensation. You cannot deny its affectation, and the shivers running throughout your body, as you’ve neglected yourself for too long.

That sensation bequeaths a knowledge, of evil. Was not the biblical lesson transfused from another lesson? What of sugar and its addictive properties? There’s not enough for you and I, to share. Sugar is gold. And there’s never enough on Earth to go all around for everybody. There’s never enough for you or I, whether you receive a small bit or a large bit.
