Music and Philosophy......

Is there any music out there that has influenced anyone to like Philosophy anymore? or makes them want to learn more? or even inspires them to take action on certain Philosophies of life? Pink Floyd is my favorite (lol no I dont do drugs) and they have a great deal of Philosophy put into their music. When it comes to political issues and defiance of capitalism my favorite is Rage Against the Machine and Bob Dylan. Any thoughts?

When reading articles, doing research, and writing philosophy I like to listen to Soul Coughing. Mike Doughty forms the best lyrics for the occasion. I do like Rage, but I get inspired by politics on my own.

Bahhh Rage! that’s what I gotta say about them, bunch of Chiapas knownothing subcomandantes de nada!

Dylan definitely rocks, but Dylan, especially in his own accounting, is far more mythic than philosophical. Dylan is to the flow of American Old Timey music as Sophocles is to the flow of the myth of Oedipus.

Actually, the most important music for me in terms of philosophy has been the stuff Produced by Bill Laswell, especially anything on the Axiom Label. Also important to my development was DJ Spooky. I read about Deleuze and Guattari in his liner notes when I was about 15 and that was a big influence. Then I met the snot nosed little fuck at one of his concerts. Typical self-important goddamned musician who’s long on theory and short on talent.

The lines from Strawberry Fields below never cease to amaze me. Every time I learn a new philosopher, I check for it in these lines and find it, perfectly succint and poetic. From Plato to Descartes to Kant to Husserl to Wittgenstein and beyond…it’s all there if you look! Weird.

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see, it’s getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn’t matter much to me.

No one I think is in my tree, i mean it must be high or low, that is you can’t you know tune in, but it’s alright, that is I think it’s not too bad.

Always, no, SOMETIMES think it’s me, but you know I know when it’s a dream, I think a “no” but mean a “yes” but it’s all wrong, that is, I think I disagree.

Some hiphop is very philosophical however it often leans a little towards sociology. The spooks for example(and dont be fooled by the name, they are no joke) I write my own music and am very philosophical. i even wrote a rap song about Descartes. \

If you think hiphop is just curses on verses-
Its about time you realised your only scratching the surface-
Socialism on the rythm and realism-
though some is deserving of harsh critiscm.

I see the human race and me-
as a revolutionry virus-
taking the world like pirates-
and fucking it up-
because its become our nature-
big one we’re livin in we dont hate ya-
your the legislator-
and your infinitly bigger-
it makes me quiver when i figure how big-ya
must be.

i wrote that when i was 16.

im a big oasis fan. kinda rare to find other fans in america. but anyways, some of the songs they have are pretty deep. Aquiesce and The Masterplan are good for starters. Also the Beatles have great tunes like someone else mentioned above.

Hmmm, really hard, considering I love music… but I guess my biggest influence from music on my philosophy was from John Lenon. But what I like to listen to while I read philosophy or just sit in think is probably something from Nobuo Uematsu or Yasunori Mitsuda. Most of their music is so captivating and really helps set the mood for deep thinking. If I ever met Uematsu I would definitely address him as Uematsu-sama.

jazz… bebop of the 50’s, freer stuff of the 60’s and electric music (miles) of the 70’s. there are no lyrics, so there’s no one putting ideas in your head… it lets you think more ‘naturally’.

Rush, Dead Kennedys, and Motorhead each have suprizingly philosophical lyrical content…

Led Zeppelin “Stairway To Heaven” is a great one too. Never says a direct religion or actually what their talking about so it leaves room for thought.

biffy clyro, wee scotish band have amazing lyrics. apparently not deliberately philosophical but definitely are. worth a listen. also english band called Reuben. check them out.

Black Magic Marker

Blackstar by David Bowie

You should watch the video for this song. Really strange. Don’t know what it’s all about, but Bowie seemed to be hinting at something extraordinary. He made this video while he was dying, and he died just after it was released. Maybe somebody on here can make some sense out of it.
