undergrad education

I am a jap.
And recent Japnanese pilosophical education is really depressive.
I’d like to study abroad.

Could you give me any advice?
Which institution is offering good undergrad program?
I am interested in philosophy of artificial intelligence.

I don’t know what it is like now, but when I was going to the University of Toronto (1985-89) it was said that they had the largest philosophy program outside of the USSR. Added to that were other philosophy courses offered by different departments. You could take only philosophy courses and still not be able to take them all before you graduated.
I don’t know about AI philosophy though.

I appreciate your answer, Nicholas.

In fact there are few ways to study philosophy of science in Jap.
Does anybody have any suggestion?

I very nearly fell down the pit of analytic philosophy last year. I can understand your concerns to get a strong taste of some of the cutting edge western philosophy. The most reputable place I know of for Artificial Intelligence is Edinburgh University in Scotland (ed.ac.uk). A.I. is still a small branch of philosophy, but is being used to help scientists programme robots to use predicate and grammar properly, using predicate calculus.

As for Philosophy of Science, I recommend pretty much most universities in Britain (ucas.ac.uk) (though the US universities specialise in this field too, focussing on the Anglo-Saxon tradition, as opposed to the continental tradtion in western philosophy). For this split, I recommend a book called ‘Wittgenstein’s Poker’. I forget the name of the author, but the other famous philosopher that forms the subject of that book, is Karl Popper, whose philosophy of science is all over the internet.

You could always just start a discussion here, to learn about and discuss the things you’re curious for! Good luck.
