Americaās sex recession could lead to an economic depression
Forget the trade wars, automation, and even the skills gap. The real threat to the U.S. economy may be that fewer Americans are in the mood for love.

Well, not love, but sex. Enduring reports of Americaās sexual recession are a sign of a serious problem for a wide-ranging list of sectors from real estate, to apparel, to condoms.
Before getting into why the falling sex rates, especially for younger Americans, threatens our GDP, itās important to address why the trend is happening in the first place.
To that end, thereās a bit of a āchicken or the eggā question to ask here: is America facing economic challenges because younger Americans are having less sex? Or are younger Americans having less sex because of their unique economic challenges?
A 2018 Census Bureau report would suggest the latter, noting that economic security is a high priority for Millennials when they seek marriage or serious committed relationships.
Based on that data, it makes sense that the millions of Americans who entered adulthood during the Great Recession a decade ago are more skittish about marriage and sex. The Great Depression era saw the U.S. birth rate hit an all-time low in 1936. Since birth control was much less available back then, itās fair to assume sex in America fell sharply during that time as well.
But the economy has been steadily growing for more than 10 years now, which encompasses most of the adult lives for Americans under 30. The enduring reports of lower sex rates despite the overall economic recovery have led to diverging explanations.
Some experts focus on the fact that Millennials are dealing with growing student loan debts, making their economic reality much worse than when previous generations were their age. But it also turns out that student loan debt isnāt the top source of debt for Americans aged 23 to 38; itās credit card debt.
The drop in sex rates and marriage rates are clearly related. Fewer people making adult connections simply leads to a decline in both, and you donāt need to be an economic genius to know that fewer marriages and children weaken economic demand overall.
That fact shifts us to pinpoint the differences in millennial lifestyles, and that brings us back to some common sense wisdom about life, relationships, and sex.Sex has always been a part of the human courtship ritual, but the widespread availability of birth control in America made it a more regular aspect of dating. Yes, thereās plenty of casual āno stringsā sex available on Tinder and Grinder. But the drop in sex rates and marriage rates are clearly related.
Fewer people making adult connections simply leads to a decline in both, and you donāt need to be an economic genius to know that fewer marriages and children weaken economic demand overall.
A number of studies have recently blamed the fall in sex and marriage rates on technology and the new opportunities it gives young adults to withdraw from in-person human relationships. Everything from online porn to sophisticated video games, to social media is being used by many as a substitute for real human contact, especially for men.
The male tendency to seek these substitutes may be the biggest single reason why sex and marriage rates are dropping. A new Cornell University study shows that women are still likely to be more attracted to and want to marry men with stronger economic prospects.
In other words, despite decades of positive strides for women in the workplace and beyond, women still find a wealthier man more attractive. So men still have to work harder to attract women. But now they have porn, video games, and other technology to provide them with much easier to obtain substitutes for that gratification. Avoiding the pressure to earn more to get more is likely also behind the multibillion-dollar race to create a realistic sex robot industry.
Of course, thereās an economic positive to this trend when we focus on teenagers. Teenage sex and pregnancy are also continuing to fall, bringing relief to the economic and cultural devastation they often cause. Less teen sex is an example of increased national responsibility.
But for men in their 20s and beyond, the sex recession appears to be a symptom of a delayed entrance into the world of fully responsible adulthood. Beating the āfailure to launchā trend isnāt just about moving out of your parentsā house, but itās also about pursuing adult relationships and starting your own family.
No one is saying people should have sexual relationships if they have no real connection to another person. But declining sex rates are a sign of a corresponding decline in the adult relationships that stoke acceptance for the costs of dating to the costs of the trappings of domestic family life.
The sex recession seems like an even more menacing sign that technology, especially A.I. technology, is seriously weakening the primordial human desire to mate with other humans and do the work necessary to make that happen. That āworkā has been an essential economic component since civilization began.
Weāve heard of the threats tech poses to job creation, but the drop in sex rates may be the clearest sign yet that techās challenges to modern love might be the biggest economic threat of all.

In Venezuela, they were teachers and doctors. To buy food, they became prostitutes.
At a squat, concrete brothel on the muddy banks of the Arauca River, Gabriel SƔnchez rattled off the previous jobs of the women who now sell their bodies at his establishment for $25 an hour.
āWeāve got lots of teachers, some doctors, many professional women and one petroleum engineer,ā he yelled over the din of vallenato music. āAll of them showed up with their degrees in hand.ā
And all of them came from Venezuela.
With inflation running in excess of 700 percent and the bolivar currency in free fall, finding food and medicine in Venezuela has become a frustrating, time-consuming task. Dayana said she often would spend four to six hours waiting in line hoping to buy a bag of flour. Other times she was forced to buy food on the black market at exorbitant rates. Hunger in Venezuela is rampant.
That has fueled a scramble to earn hard currency ā Colombian pesos or, even better, the U.S. dollar, which is the legal tender of Ecuador and Panama.
Dayana said that on a good night she makes the equivalent of $50 to $100, selling her services 20 minutes at a time.
āProstitution obviously isnāt a good job,ā she said. āBut Iām thankful for it, because itās allowing me to buy food and support my family.ā
Selling sex is legal in Colombia, and even small towns have red-light districts where authorities look the other way. So while immigration police were actively hunting down Venezuelans selling trinkets and panhandling in Araucaās central square, the women along brothel row said they were rarely harassed.

Millennialsā Lackluster Sex Lives May Doom The U.S. Economy

Sexual intimacy is commonly associated with healthy relationships and overall wellbeing.
If the so-called experts are to believed, millennials have āruinedā industries as varied as cruises, paper napkins, and diamonds. Now comes word from a CNBC op-ed by analyst Jake Novak that the lackluster sex lives of the demographic group the media love to hate is hurting the broader U.S. economy. The notion isnāt as crazy as it seems.
Researchers have taken note of the āGreat American Sex Draughtā for years. Data from the respected General Social Survey found in 2018 that 23 percent of adults said they hadnāt had sex in a year, an all-time high. The reasons for this phenomenon are both sociological and economical including the fact that record numbers of young adults continue to live with their parents.
Novak argues that the āsex recessionā is weakening what he calls āthe primordial human desire to make with other humans and do the work to make that happen.ā The āworkā heās talking about refers to the money people spend in their search to meet someone special, which can be considerable, Match.com estimated in 2016 that the average unmarried adult spent $1,596 annually on dating.
All those flowers, tickets to concerts and restaurant meals can certainly add up though itās hard to imagine that the āSex Recessionā could cause an economic depression, as Novak suggests.

Prostitution in South Sudan is increasing in the severe economic crisis. After independence in 2011, the capital Juba became one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. It attracted investors and traders ā and commercial sex became more common. Recently, the decline in crude oil production as one consequence of more than two years of civil war in the country, has been exacerbating poverty. As a means of survival, more and more girls and women opt for prostitution.

Well hypergamy does play a role in human sexuality. However so do a lot of things. Your thesis is reductionist, and therefor deserves no more attention than these few sentences. If you want to reformulate your ideas into a more serious, nuanced and adult theory, in which hypergamy is analyzed in its relationship to any of the other innumerable factors in the actually very complex and still not entirely understood phenomenon of human sexuality, then be my guest. Or keep shitposting, plenty of people will bite it looks like; quite a few pages in this thread.
The absence of a final absolute answer will be enough to discredit any opinion, methinks.
Alluding to ācomplexityā implies insight that cannot deliver the goods.
Yet, the most complex begins with a simple observationā¦and metaphysics must be founded on physics - something even an animal can perceive.
In this context, my specialty, the complexity arises by a simple, obvious, fact.
There are no absolutes (no perfect, final, complete, whole, singularity)- but only degrees, fractions, levels, any moniker will do alluding to the same concept of fluidity.
Individuals are not entirely male or femaleā¦but a mixture of these two binary reproductive roles.
Fitness is measured in relation to the environment, where these two specialized types must function. the only measure of sexual types is reproduction, not pleasure.
Therefore, we can say that masculinity/femininity is a measure of the degree of male/female roles, as these interact within a specific environment.
So, we have gradations of masculine/feminine not absolute wholes.
homosexuality can be evaluated in this context as a genetic malfunction - brought about by hormonal imbalances and environmental conditions - promoting a feminine dominated psyche, producing a behaviour that inhibits reproduction, if it remains true to itself.
We can place paedophilia in this group of unfit mutations, without getting it the unsavoury topic of what constitutes an adult that can give consent - Ecmandu can explain.
Having said that, the evolution of this binary method is not accidental. We may say even consciousness is dominated by binary methods of 1/0, good/bad, etc.
The brain itself is physically divided in two parts. Binary thinking and dualism, is part of the human condition - part of the living condition.
It evolves first because it is the easiest, requiring minimal cognitive work.
Male/Female is a binary which evolves distinct mental and physical traits, facilitating specific outcomes.
These genetic roles are given a memetic foundation when placed within man-made environments.
Gender is not a social construct, but must be an extension of genetics, if it is not nihilistic.
Only nihilism attempts to contradict genetics - the physical world - with ideological constructs. Accusing others of socially engineering so as to conceal its own motives to do so.
To put it simply, itās not that gender is a social construct, but that gender ought to be a social construct that contradicts genetic impulses, because the ideal world, for Nihilists - of the positive sort - is a world created exclusively by the mind.
Alluding to complexity implies insight.
Okay Aegean: you see, in medicine- or in any specialized field in fact, (literally every single one of them) a kind of internal language develops; a jargon that actually represents the very simplification you call for: the edifice of knowledge in these fields builds up over time until the only practical mode of communication is employing equally specialized words that are used to tag large amounts of information that it would be impossible to continually spell out and keep going through in real time. I wrote an entire essay on the concept of mimetic hyperinflation for example, going up from the concrete language of experience that everyone should be able to understand, all the way up to the highest level abstraction. This concept is important in my work, so it would be impossible to,- every time I want to bring up the material in that essay,- go through the entire 50 page tractate in the middle of a sentence. So I employ a ābig wordā that is simply meant to serve as a tag directing the reader to that material to further contextualize whatever I happen to be saying concerning such materials. Every field does this; I donāt understand your apparent conviction that it should be otherwise with philosophy. I get that you donāt want to partake in the riches of the Occident- in learning, and you have no desire to scale the edifice of knowledge, and just keep your armchair meditations on the ground level without every going anywhere with it: but I, and others- do.
And the philosopher does not start from the simple and work up to the complex- or start with the complex and work down to the simple. A philosopher possesses an instinct, an instinct to unconsciously and continuously extract from his environment, from what he reads or sees or hearts,- even from out of his own inner dialogue: patterns. And one day such a pattern dawns on him, as an accumulation of his entire life-process and experience; a symbolic reification of his total existence, which is actually capable of intuiting some datum about the structure of the universe and reality themselves,- a pattern which is capable of drawing other patterns into its orbit, and of transmuting them-- into itself. This arche-pattern is the LOGOS, and it follows a sequence of multiplicity emerging from unity, and unity redissolving into multiplicity, ad infinitum- in this way spontaneously generating new patterns, new perspectives which, however apparently disparate they may appear from the superficies, express a kind of āaesthetic unity of ideasā far superior to any merely logical conformation and unity.
Donāt fucking know who you are tbh.
Not that it matters.
Joker.
It is so fucking facile to hate all women rather than noticing what makes your life and experiences, choices and attitudes, factors in what you have experienced.
Itās like reading an incel whose on prozac and the prozac is working so you are happy to hate women.
Thatās my impression too. His frustration is skewing his perception of reality.
What about all the women who get rejected? Why is there not a single tear spilled on their account here? Wtf is that? You think it never happens to them? Ill tell you it does, and one woman getting rejected, especially a pretty one who is not supposed to get rejected, is worse than ten thousand incels being rejected. Because it just gnarls the stomach, even in the guy who rejected her. Its unnatural. But sometimes you have to reject a woman because of ethical considerations or because your god damned house is a mess. Fuck, theres all kinds of reasons, she might be half your age and youāre raised right. It still hurts. Okay? Think about that. Let it haunt you, and ābuck upā and man up and donāt be a bitch and take the gut-punch and just do your part.

Well, yes. I find it odd when members of either sex are blissfully unaware that the other side also gets shit on with regularity. Itās nice to think the problem is entirely the opposite sex, but how could one not have noticed how people are getting shattered, hearts torn out, cheated on, cold shouldered into nothing, demeaned and so on, on both sides. It makes me wonder if someone has ever been close to someone on the other side if they think this is simple. Any woman Iāve ever been with or close to has gone through at least a couple of different categories of hellacious treatment. Likewise with male friends. Some attractive psychopaths on each side and some rich ones manage to do fine, but itās rare, unless they meeet something like a soulmate early on and stick with that.
Damn, missed all the pornz.
